He lived at Alexandria, in the time of the first Ptolemy, B. He was the founder of a school of mathematics there.
Euclid's compilation of the major results of ancient geometry in a comprehensive axiomatic framework remains a classic and easily the most influential scientific work of all time. Beginning with definitions, axioms, and postulates, the Elements deduces hundreds of general theorems about plane and solid geometry, including the famous Pythagorean theorem.

It is claimed that, when asked by King Ptolemy if he could make his solutions easier to follow, Euclid said, "There is no royal road to geometry," In , Sir Henry Billingsley first translated the Elements into English. The World of Mathematics, Vol. 4
This item isn't sold in stores. The Elements , which went through more than editions and consisted of propositions, are divided into 13 "books" an archaic word for "chapters". The elements started with 23 definitions, five postulates , and five "common notions," and systematically built the rest of plane and solid geometry upon this foundation.
The five Euclid's postulates are. It is possible to draw a straight line from any point to another point. It is possible to produce a finite straight line continuously in a straight line.

It is possible to describe a circle with any center and radius. If a straight line falling on two straight lines makes the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles , the straight lines if extended indefinitely meet on the side on which the angles which are less than two right angles lie. Dunham Euclid's fifth postulate is known as the parallel postulate.
Mathmatics From First Choice Books
After more than two millennia of study, this postulate was found to be independent of the others. In fact, equally valid non-Euclidean geometries were found to be possible by changing the assumption of this postulate.
